Lerato Kossie is a proud South African who grew up in the townships of Cape Town and now works with Waves for Change, a nonprofit organization utilizing surfing as a healing mechanism for young people. His participation in INN’s Global Freedom Fellowship in 2025 heightened his awareness of how he navigates different environments, particularly in his professional work. Though naturally confident, Lerato has experienced moments of doubt throughout his career, often feeling enclosed within his own shell. Through his journey, he has learned that life requires taking risks and seizing opportunities for impact.
Lerato now brings forward proposals to national and international governments advocating for the recognition of formerly incarcerated individuals—people who have endured immense pain and spent significant time away from their loved ones. He believes that addressing these issues demands patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations, waiting for the right moment to implement meaningful change.
Deeply committed to social justice, Lerato previously led programs for young men at The Justice Desk and is inspired by initiatives that bring hope, illuminate possibilities, and open minds to strategize solutions for pressing socio-political challenges. He is motivated by the potential to create equitable opportunities for marginalized communities and sees his work as a contribution to a fairer and more compassionate society.
